Ok, so first you add 1.4x to both sides Can you do that?
5.4+1.6+8.6?
You mean? \[5.4+1.6x=8.6 \]

Ok, so now, you subtract 5.4 from both sides c:
1.6x=3.2
now you need to get x by itself
Divide 1.6 by 1.6 and do the same to the opposite side \[ \frac{1.6x }{ 1.6 }=\frac{ 3.2 }{ 1.6 } \] That leaves x alone on the left side and the number 2 one the right side \[x=2 \] To check redo the whole equation with your new information (x=2) Check: 5.4+1.6(2)=8.6
