OpenStudy (ashley_fay):

Can anyone help me simplify square roots? I have some sort of mental brick wall refusing to let me understand them, Thanks!

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

start at simple numbers the square root of 4 is 2 because 2 * 2 = 4

OpenStudy (ashley_fay):

yes

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

4 is a perfect square beacuse its square root is an integer

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

it also as another square root -2 because -2*-2 = 4

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

another example would be the square roots of 25 which are 5 and -5

OpenStudy (ashley_fay):

Okay

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

when it comes to other numbers which are not perfect squares there is not an easy way to find the square roots by hand but we have a marvallous little machine called a calculator to do it for us eg square root of 14 on my calculator is 3.741657387

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

there are no real square roots of a negative number because no 2 real numbers multiplied together would give a negative

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the square roots of fractions :- square root of 1/4 is 1/2 or -1/2 |dw:1420912839976:dw|
