Given the system of equations, what is the solution? x + 3y = 5 x - 3y = -1 {(-4, -3)} {(2, 1)} {(-2, 3)}

OpenStudy (ajspeller):

Add the equations together because this will eliminate the y variable. What is x + x ? What is 3y - 3y ? What is 5 - 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x 0 4

OpenStudy (ajspeller):

2x + 0 = 4 2x = 4 Solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x is 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer is (2,1) because the -3 and +3 cancel each other out you then get a simple algebra equation, once you solve for x, which is 2, you would then take one of the original problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and plug in the 2 to solve for y, which is 1.

OpenStudy (ajspeller):

Bingo! Now substitute the x value of 2 into either of the other equations to calculate the value for y. Then you are done!

Thank you guys so much! =)
