Melissa has a choice of two phone plans. The first plan has a monthly fee of $40 and charges $0.50 per additional peak minute over included minutes. The second plan has a monthly fee of $50 and charges $0.25 per additional peak minute over an equal number of included minutes. Graph the system of linear equations. Find the number of additional peak minutes for which the second plan will be as cheap as the first, and tell how much Melissa would pay for that month. You should have 2 answers for this question:the number of additional peak minutes and the cost of the bill for that month. @ShadowLeg

were you able to figure out the equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

".The first plan has a monthly fee of $40 and charges $0.50 per additional peak minute over included minutes." so we start with $40 and add on bits of $0.50 for every additional minute. If x = # of minutes, then we'll have 40+0.50x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the cost of the first plan (y) is y = 40+0.50x where x is the number of additional peak minutes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay that make much more sense thank you so the second one would be y=.25x+50

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you have this system y = 0.50x + 40 y = 0.25x + 50

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you can solve it any way you like, but they want you to graph the two equations. You can do so by hand or use a graphing calculator if you don't have a graphing calculator, you can use something like desmos https://www.desmos.com/calculator/

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

where the two lines cross is where the solution is located

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The part that got me confused is the like over included minutes. That part confused me

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

for plan 1, it seems like they charge $40 for the entire month and give you a set number of minutes. Those minutes are free if you go over those minutes, they charge an additional $0.50 per minute

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

are you able to graph the two lines?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I got it thank u!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
