A furnace wall comprises a 200 mm thick inner layer of refractory ceramic and a 3mm thick stainless steel outer covering. The internal heat transfer coefficient is 100 Wm-2K-1 and the external heat transfer coefficient is 15 Wm- 2K-1 . The furnace approximates to a 1m cube. If the internal temperature is 900 °C and the external temperature is 50 °C, what is the rate of heat loss? For these conditions, what is the temperature of the outer surface of the stainless steel?
