WILL FAN AND MEDAL!!!! Need help on Factoring polynomials....picture is attached

OpenStudy (sesca89):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as sides of white part are s and (s+1) ... so .. s*(s+1)=30 ... solve this and we get s...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then the sides of shaded part are s and 2... so its area would be s*2 .... and from above equation we would be able to get value of s....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first equation will transform to \[s ^{2}+s-30=0\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[s ^{2}+6s-5s-30=0\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

factored it as 2 and (-5) because coefficent of x is (+1) and constant is (-30) ... so by looking at constant we know.. one factor should be positive and one negative.... but since coefficient of x is positive that means bigger number should be positive...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

understood?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry factored as 6 and (-5) *

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and moreover... factors should give constant on multiplication and summing of factors give coefficient of x.
