Is "the Dark Ages" an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages?

Heck yes, but keep in mind that they are also different times. The Dark Ages began slightly before the Middle Ages, and ended before the Middle ages as well. Even though there is a a large part of our historical timeline that overlaps both, they are not technically the same. Check your dates before saying an event occured in "The Middle Ages" because you may or may not be correct.
