Diwali "The Festival of Lights" Diwali is an annual festival that is important to followers of Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. Different religious groups celebrate Diwali at different times. However, all groups celebrate the festival during the fall months. Origin of the "Festival of Lights" The name “Diwali” comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, which means “row of lights.” Diwali is known as “the Festival of Lights.” It is a celebration of the victory of good over evil. The festival celebrates different times that good triumphed over evil. One of the most important times is when Lord Rama (a popular hero of Hindu mythology) returned from a war in which he killed the demon king Ravanna. Thankful citizens used small oil lamps called diye to light Lord Rama’s, his wife’s, and his brother’s way as they traveled back to their home, where Rama was crowned King. The Celebration Today, diye are an important part of the celebration of Diwali. These small lamps are lit in homes and temples and floated down rivers on boats. Also, fireworks displays have become an important part of the festival. To get ready for Diwali, many people take special baths, dress in new clothes, draw rangolis (decorative drawings made of powder) outside their homes, and perform a religious ritual called a puja. Diwali Diversity As people who celebrate Diwali have immigrated to different parts of the world, they have brought the celebration with them. It is not unusual to find Diwali celebrations in countries as diverse and as far from India as the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, and Singapore. Each country celebrates Diwali in its own way. 2.
