Why are modern-day griots important to our understanding of the history of the Mali Empire?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-most written history from the mali empire was propaganda, but griots tradionally passed down more accurate histories -the early mali didnt keep written records, so oral histories passed down by griots are vital source of history from the period -because griots are uniques to mali's culture, we can determine the spread of the culture's influence through where present-day griots live -written histories from the early days of the empire were destroyed by invaders, but griots maintains these traditions orally.
