I notice that reading helps writing.  And while I agree with Col and Mal, anybody can make a great author!  As always, practice makes perfect.  If you always do what you love, you'll be great at it!  So my advice is, read some books from some authors that you like.  Branch out their structure and style, and have at it!  Have fun!

As far as characterization and details go, pay attention to how your friends and family speak. Where they pause and where they speed up. Some people speak in fragments. Some people can't pronounce certain words. 

Also pay attention to how people interact with the world. Some people fold their legs meditation-style when they sit in roller chair. Instead of writing on 8 1/2 by 11 notebook paper, some people take notes on tiny yellow pads. 

The point is to be more aware of the world around you, and put THAT in your writing. Only then, will it be authentic.

you have to have a great imagination one that will allow you to explore also like a few said before you also have to watch the world around you and it depends if you wanted to be a fictional or non- fictional writer this is all important and you should always think of your writing ability important to you who knows maybe one day you will be a very successful writer just put your mind to it good luck.
