With respect to family life, how does post-industrial North American society differ from societies of other periods?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, societies from other periods would most likely have the father of the family working, the mother as the housewives and the children helping out around the house/to make money as well. Remember at one time there were no child labor laws, and in Agricultural society children would work on the farm and such. Therefore the difference in family life would be, the roles of each family memeber, the time spent together. How well each family member understand each other, and the role of authority with the parents. As in now a days children/teens act up more because they have less responsibilites and more chances to act up, whereas that time, it's possible that because of their responsibilites they were less likely to act up and/or disrespect their parents. That's just one example there are many possible ways to look at it. :)
