Located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon in northern Italy is a quite large island called Poveglia Island. It is considered to be one of the world’s most haunted islands. In 2010, it was auctioned to a man named Luigi Brugnaro for $704,000. Don’t try to go to Venice and ask one of the many boaters to take you there, because they will refuse.
The island started out in the red when it served as a home for victims of the black plague. Venice was one of the most powerful societies, in 1379. Then it was under attack by the neighboring city, Genoa. So, the people living on Poveglia were moved to another place called Giudecca to keep them safe.
The island was said to be uninhabited in the 15th century. In the 16th century there was another plague outbreak. They had an island just a few miles away so, why not send the victims there once again. This helped Venice from having a large death toll but made Poveglia an Island of Hell.
