Will Medal and Fan The ratio of two numbers is 1 to 5, and the sum of the numbers is 36. What is the smaller number? 6 7 8 9

OpenStudy (aakashsudhakar):

If the ratio of the two numbers is 1 to 5, it can be rewritten as X:Y --> 1:5, where Y is exactly 5X. Given the sum of the numbers is 36, this can allow us to say that X + Y = 36, or X + 5X = 6X = 36. Quick division tells us that X = 6, and since Y is simply a bigger multiple of X, you know that the smaller number is X = 6.
