Frederick Douglass, who would become internationally known as the most distinguished African American of his generation, did not know when he was born, who his white father was, or even much about the ancestry of his mother, a slave named Harriet Bailey. Douglass would have been proud to know that he had deep roots in the national heritage, which he so passionately proclaimed to be the shared heritage of black and white Americans. In fact, we now know that he was descended on his mother’s side from a family whose history in America went back at least five generations, to the earliest settlement of the eastern shore of Maryland, where Douglass was born Frederick Bailey in February 1818.
