The only instructions: Answer the following questions and provide textual evidence. 1. Many activities, images, emblems, and symbols repeat at critical points in the story (i.e. weather, colors, etc.). Find the first examples of the following images and symbols and explain their significance; discuss the effect they have on the text: cars, music, weather, party scenes, eyes, phone conversations, images of fertility and sterility (or barrenness). Choose 2 images/symbols to discuss. 2. Fitzgerald uses color repeatedly throughout the novel. Choose one color that is repeated in the first three chapters. Discuss the color’s initial significance and how Fitzgerald uses the color to evoke specific emotions in the reader. 3. Is Nick someone of high morals and an ethical character? Why or why not. Cite passages. 4. As a whole, are the characters likable? What qualities do they possess that attract and repel?
