5x - 9 = 2x + 6 --- subtract 2x from both sides
5x - 2x - 9 = 2x - 2x + 6 -- combine like terms
3x - 9 = 6 --- add 9 to both sides
3x - 9 + 9 = 6 + 9 -- combine like terms
3x = 15 -- divide both sides by 3
x = 5

now sub 5 in for x into either of the equations to find y
y = 5x - 9
y = 5(5) - 9
y = 25 - 9
y = 16

check..
y = 2x + 6
16 = 2(5) + 6
16 = 10 + 6
16 = 16 (correct)
