Do you know how to solve an equation?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes
but I am drawing a blank on this one
OpenStudy (callisto):
Hmmm... Solving an inequality is like solving an equation, except when you multiply / divide both sides by a negative number, you need to change the sign to the opposite "direction".
So, let's say it's -11x+9 = 24. What is the first step to solve this equation?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-9 from both sides
OpenStudy (callisto):
Nope. On the contrary, you need to +9 to both sides in order to cancel the -9 on the left, which is the side with the unknown to solve.

x<3?
OpenStudy (callisto):
Not quite...
OpenStudy (callisto):
Can you show how you did it?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
24 + 9=33 /11 =3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I have been doing these for 3 days know and have got almost all of them right but this one I am stumped on.

1st add 9 to both sides what will u get?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
0 and 33
OpenStudy (godlovesme):
Yes so -11x < 33 now divide both sides by -11
Do u know what happens when u divide or multiply by a negative # when dealing with inequalities?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
x>-3
OpenStudy (godlovesme):
Awesome :) thanks for the medal :)
