Approximately 1/20 Caucasian Americans has a recessive allele for a hereditary disorder known as cystic fibrosis, but only 1/2000 Caucasian babies born in the US are afflicted with the disorder. These people have two alleles for CF(cystic fibrosis), and they produce large amounts of mucus which accumulates in their lungs, liver and pancreas. The mucus clogs important ducts and causes major problems and major damage. So, why is there such a difference between the # of people who have the allele for CF and the # that actually contracts it at birth?
The difference is that many people carry the disease, which is recessive, and from that not many people are actually born with the recessive disease.
but DJ the question was why.
ok thanks
