Grammar question: Our tour guide requested, while hiking through the national park, *we not throw our garbage* on the trails. vs Our tour guide requested, while hiking through the national park, *we did not throw our garbage* on the trails. The first answer is correct - but why??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

second one is past tense with "did"

But isn't 'requested' past tense too?

i think you lack a modal in your subordinate clause. "we should not throw our garbage" on the trails would make it correct. "did" should not be because it is of past tense form, which you have not done the action yet.
