at mr vid's video rentals you can join his Vid Club for monthly membership fee of $30.Club members pay only $.85 to rent each movie. If you are not a member of the Vid CLub,the movies rent for $2.25 each. How many videos would you have to rent each month to make a membership worth the investment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got the equation 30+.85x=2.25x is this the right thing to do to solve

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Great question. \(\large\color{slate}{ 0.85x+30~~~~~~~~\le~~~~~~~~2.25x }\) \(\lfloor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\rfloor\) \(\lfloor ~~~~~~~~~~~\rfloor\) \(\large\color{slate}{ \Uparrow }\) \(\large\color{slate}{ \Uparrow }\) the cost for movie the cost for each movie with the membership. without the membership. (x is the number of movies) (x is the number of movies)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Hope this helps.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

(the floor brackets are just to point, they aren't a floor function or anything of that sort. )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman could my equation work too. i put 30+.85x=2.25x

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

well, you can't buy a half of a movie can you?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

there might not be a natural number x that satisfies your equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i cant use it then, so i dont understand your equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like how im i suppose to solve it

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

wait, first off... do you understand what my equation is actually saying?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the sign means greater or equal too, rit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes. Saying that `0.85x+30` (i.e. the cost per x number of movies w/ membership) is greater than `2.25x` (i.e. the cost per number of movies x without membership).

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I mean is less than (in second line of my comment, instead of "is greater than" )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok how would i solve it to find x

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\large\color{slate}{ \displaystyle0.85x+30\le2.25x }\) subtract 0.85x from both sides. what do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtracting x from both sides will be -1.4 rit?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you are subtract 0.85x from both sides, not just x.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

subtracting**

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\large\color{slate}{ 0.85x+30 \le2.25x}\) \(\large\color{slate}{ 0.85x+30 \color{red}{-0.85x}\le2.25x\color{red}{-0.85x} }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

see how I subtracted from both sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes is -1.4 rit

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I do not understand you, please say what you are trying to say correctly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.25x minus -0.85x = -1.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u still not understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

??????????????? @SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

that is off, retry please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

you are leaving terms out. It seems to me as though that you don't have a proper knowledge to solve this problem. Or your x's disappear for no known reason, or the -1.4 , what is -1.4, where is it from? I just don't really get what you are doing, that is how wrong it is. Please don't take my words offensively, but it seems like you need to review more,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do have the knowledge to solve this problem u said subtract the 0.85x from both sides and thats what i did and got 3.1x @SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 0.85x+30\color{red}{-0.85x}\le2.25x-0.85x }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

At first, what happens on the left side, do you see anything cancel?
