The aims of the 1848 revolutions was liberal nationalism - to create nations based on ethno-lingusitic groups and create governments based on popular sovereignty. They failed because the noble classes were too ingrained in European society and were unwilling to loosen their power. The great powers wanted to maintain a conservative status quo that opposed revolution and change. Shortly after some of the goals of the revolutions were achieved, but along conservative nationalistic lines - to create nations based on ethno-lingustic groups, but with constitutional monarchical governments.
