A holiday resort has two rectangular-shaped pools, including a swimming pool for adults and a wading pool for children. The two pools are similar in shape and have dimensions, in meters, as shown in the figure below. A rectangular swimming pool has length 30 and width 20. A similar rectangular wading pool has length 2x + 2 and width 2x. What is the value, in meters, of x? 1 2 4 5

I assume by similar that the two rectangular pools are geometrically similar. That means that the corresponding sides are in proportion.

Directrix (directrix):

To apply that to your problem, set up the proportion as follows: 30 is to (2x + 2) as 20 is to (2x) 30/(2x + 2) = 20/2x You can crank out the algebra for solving for x by hand and brain. If you are allowed to use technology, go to this site: http://www.wolframalpha.com/ and enter this: 30/(2x + 2) = 20/(2x)
