The following passage is from page 12 of the book Outlaws of the Wild West by Arthur Wallace:

Billy the Kid, one of the most famous outlaws of the “Wild West,” was killed in 1881 by Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. His real name was Henry McCarty, but he also went by the name William H. Bonnie for many years.
