OpenStudy (bizzeizzy):

What is the primary impact of the excerpt? It creates an anxious feeling. It dramatizes an exhausted feeling. It establishes a neutral feeling. It conveys a content feeling. I looked upon the scene before me-upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain-upon the bleak walls-upon the vacant eyelike windows-upon a few rank sedges-and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees-with an utter depression of soul, which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the afterdream of the reveler upon opium-the bitter lapse into everyday life-the hideous dropping off of the veil. There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart-an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime. What was it-I paused to think-what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher?

Which of the following statements best paraphrases the second sentence of the excerpt above? I was depressed by the house and couldn't ignore the feeling. I was saddened by the house and began to see it differently. I was confused by the house and began to think it was imaginary. I was annoyed by the house and began to believe it was alive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This sentence? "There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart-an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime."

OpenStudy (bizzeizzy):

I suppose so. I'm having trouble interpreting what the second sentence is haha

OpenStudy (bizzeizzy):

Well the answer options says something about a house..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm "There was an iciness, a sinking, a sickening of the heart-an unredeemed dreariness of thought which no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime." *I was depressed by the house and couldn't ignore the feeling. *I was saddened by the house and began to see it differently. *I was confused by the house and began to think it was imaginary. *I was annoyed by the house and began to believe it was alive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"an iciness" - feeling cold inside "a sinking .... sickening of the heart" - sudden anxiety "an unredeemed dreariness of thought" - again, sudden anxiety "no goading of the imagination could torture into aught of the sublime" - you can't will it away with your imagination So what do you think? xD

OpenStudy (bizzeizzy):

depressed or saddden

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Close though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):
