As the sectional crisis over California intensified in 1850, Northern states considered leaving the Union. President Zachary Taylor decided to compromise. Northern politicians banned slavery everywhere. Southern states considered leaving the Union.
some of the major sectional differences from the 1820-1850s were: the issue of slavery begging with the Missouri compromise of 1820 declaring that any state that lies below the bottom border of Missouri would be a slave state and any stay above would not have slavery, the main problem with this was that after the Mexican-American war California was divided in half and therefore was not direwctly slave freindly or free. the slavery issue was cleared up partialy by the comprimise of 1850. Also with the election of 1832 A new plitical party was formed called the Democrats, lead by Andrew Jackson, and in 1836 the whig party came about showing resistance to Andrew Jackson's ideas and the whole idea of jacksonianism, and the problem with this was that the era of good feelings(No Political parties) was ended and the ussual oposition bashing began again. last but not least was the fights in congress on admitting Texas to the union or not. In 1836 Texas broke away from Mexico and became its own country, and had declaired itself a slave country and if it was admited to the union as a state it would throw the delicate ballance between slave states and non-slave states in congress.so the south wanted Texas and the north didnt want Texas
hope this helps you:)
