Need help simplifying Simplify x^2 + 5x + 4/x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

***x^2 + 5x + 4/x-1

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

x-1 or x+1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

crap i messed it up again. its x^2-5x+4/x-1

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Ok, this is pretty simple. How can you factor the trinomial x^2-5x+4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-4)(x-1)

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

What two numbers add up to -5 and multiply to 4?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Correct

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

\[\frac{ (x-1)(x-4) }{ (x-1) }\]

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

When you have the same term on the numerator and denominator, you can cross them out

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Leaving you with just x-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh I see. thanks!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have one more question on simplifying.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-y/x+y + x+y/x-y

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Sorry, your gonna have to open a new question. I literally have to go, now. Sorry again.
