Scenario!!! Sandy purchases music from iTunes which she burns to her MP3 player. She frequently shares these music files with her friends. 1. Is this legal? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (tjbrew):

Ask yourself this: If you were the artist who sang the song, wouldn't you want to get paid for every copy that someone had, or would you be ok with only one person paying you and then that person giving your song away to 150 people? Does this help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just answered this question for someone else and will copy paste it here. If the music is never LEAVING as in being ported or taken of of her MP3 then it is not illegal and she has rights to listen to music with her friends. On the other side of she takes music that she bought ONE copy of and makes another for example putting it on a disc and giving it to her friend that copy is pirated and is illegal. Hope this helps, Best of luck. Cody.

Thanks HurricaneScratch! It was unclear to me whether "...shares these music files with her friends." was sharing as in listening to them with her friends or sharing as in actually giving them away. Hopefully Dedi will know. I think your explanation takes care of either scenario. :)
