Navy led by Admiral Dewey scuttled the Spanish armada in the famous Battle of Manila Bay, thus this defeat of Spain paved the way for the Spanish-American war in the Philippines. During that time, the Philippines was a colony of Spain, and subsequently the U. S. eventually booting out Spain as a colonizer here. The Philippines was granted by the U. S. its independence on 04 July 1946. When the date of this "so-called Independence Day" was moved to 12 June sometime in 1963 by Philippine legislative action upon the efforts of then Pres.
