I found this on another website and it does a pretty great job of explaining things.



The constitution works because it empowers the people of a nation to decide the future. It gives us free will and enables us to find our own free way to happiness. When Ben Franklin was asked what kind of government we have he replied "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?"
With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded,
"A republic, if you can keep it."

The idea of a republic with freedom rides on our lap the document was set forth to imply checks and balances that lead us to the decision. When we forgo the Constitution we forgo our rights and lead to tyranny. The Bill of Rights for example has an article implying the right to bear arms. The right enables us to empower ourselves against a tyrannical government, it is the last ditch effort to save the Republic from the past. Many men signed their names to the Declaration of Independence knowing full well they would be hanged if they failed the Revolutionary War. The Constitution was also signed by these men to empower us and protect us of the fears and losses they encountered. It would not behoove our founding fathers to make a document that was not well thought out. I suggest for us both to read and understand the document, as it has created the greatest and wealthiest nation on Earth. Last time I checked Socialism has failed many times over for various reasons. As a side note Hitler disarmed the Jews before the Holocaust, Huh. Read and read some more on history and never depend on the Government, they work for you.
