The government of Nigeria has started an economic reform program called the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS). It has restored economic stability and effectively managed oil revenues. The NEEDS focuses on four key strategies: • Reforming government institutions and restructuring and strengthening government; • Growing the private sector by reducing the influence of government in the economy and accelerating the privatization, deregulation and liberalization program; • Beginning to implement a social charter to improve people's access to health, education, welfare, employment, security and participation; and • Value re-orientation including anti-corruption, freedom of information and enhancing the role of civil society. adapted from http://www.dfid.gov.uk/countries/africa/nigeria.asp What type of economy is emerging in Nigeria under the reforms of the NEEDS program? traditional economy mixed market economy free market economy command economy
