On December 5, the annual U.S. Chess Championship was held in San Diego. Players of all ages from across the country competed against each other. This year, a 16-year-old boy won the top prize of $25,000. He was from White Plains, New York.

Hikaru Nakamura beat his final opponent, a 34-year-old player. This victory makes him the youngest winner since 1958. That year Bobby Fischer won the same competition at 14 years old.

Nakamura has been a chess champ for many years. He began playing in chess competitions when he was seven. By 15 years old, Nakamura was considered one of the best chess players in the world.

The UNITED STATES CHESS FEDERATION (USCF) is a U.S. organization that chess players can join. This group represents the United States in the World Chess Federation. The USCF holds annual competitions called U.S. Chess Cahmpionships. The group wants to find the best chess players in the U.S.

There are around 90,000 members in the U.S. More than 2,000 chess clubs are connected to the USCF. Over 100,000 chess players compete in events held by the USCF each year.

The organization started in 1939. In 1972, the interest in chess grew because of the attention Bobby Fischer received. The USCF's membership doubled. The membership has grown by half over the last five years. This increase is due to the popularity of academic chess and chess computers.

The USCF holds thousands of tournaments annually. USCF officials judge 500,000 games each year. The USCF staff organizes 25 national championships every year. Titles are given to amateurs and professionals alike.

The USCF supports American chess players of all levels to compete worldwide. One out of every eight Grandmasters is from the U.S. Beginners are welcome to join the USCF.
