So think of factors of 9: 9x1=9 9x2=18 9x3=27 And factors of 6: 6x1=6 6x2=12 6x3=18 And you see we have a match. Both 9 and 6 have 18 in common. So now we create new fractions using 18 as the denominator. Let's look at 5/6 To get 6 to 18 we have to multiply by 3 as we see above. So we also multiply 5 by 3. The new fraction then becomes 15/18 Let's look at 7/9 To get 9 to 18 we multiply by 2. So we also multiply 7 by 2. The new fraction then becomes 14/18. So the new problem is now: 15/18 + 14/18 Now you solve with simple addition.
