A traveler is walking on a moving walkway in the airport. The traveler must walk back on the walkway to get a bag her forgot. The traveler's ground speed is 2ft/s against the walkway and 6ft/s with the walkway. What is the travelers speed off the walkway? What is it the speed of the current?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do i do then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so ihave to find r and w

OpenStudy (perl):

right

OpenStudy (perl):

let r = speed of traveler off the walkway (or speed of traveler on still walkway) w = speed of walkway itself r - w= 2 r + w = 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how do i do that

OpenStudy (perl):

you can add the two equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 6+2 would equal 8 which would be the guy walking on the runway

OpenStudy (perl):

if you add the two equations you would get 2r = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so r would be 2 and the i would multiply 2 by to get 16 which would be him walking of the runway

OpenStudy (perl):

2r = 8 divide both sides by 2 r = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is him now walking off the runway
