Spectrophotometer: For an assignment, I need to explain why a spectrophotometer would need replacing over the years. For instance, what kind of mishandling could have occured or why spectrophotometer wouldn't work perpetually even if handled with care... but I cannot seem to find any reasons.

spectrophotometers use light bulbs as their source. light bulbs fade and burn out over time, don't they?

Yes, spectrophotometers depend on some type of lamp, which can be either thrown out or re-used. For instance, a single-beam spectrophotometer, which can use a tungsten or deuterium lamp, depending on the wavelength region that you're interested in.
