In your diagram the dot line can be treated as a parallel line. If you do that, then the hypotenuse of the triangle can be treated as a traverse line. Then from geometry a transverse opposite interior angles are equal. So the triangle would have 40 degrees. 500 m is the opposite side and you want to find x which is the hypotenuse of the right triangle. So using trig functions we can use \[xsin(\theta) =500\] Now just solve for x and plug in 40 degrees.\[x =\frac{ 500 }{ \sin(40)}\]\[x = 777.9 \]. So you will have x = 777.9 m.
