What did Benjamin Franklin likely wish to imply through the analogy in these lines from The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin? By my rambling digressions I perceive myself to be grown old. I us'd to write more methodically. But one does not dress for private company as for a publick ball. 'Tis perhaps only negligence. Many years have passed since his retirement from public office. His digressions are excusable because of the personal nature of the work. He cannot say all that he has to say in this narrative because of the lack of space.
