it says a figure is made of a right triangle and a parallelogram, but as i see it is made of a rectangle and a parallelogram (that has an altitude of 8 units)
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
lets look at the 2 shapes:
You got a rectangle 12.6cm by 10cm, and this shouldn't be a problem to find this rectangle.
then a parallelogram, is what you have to explore a bit more carefully.
\(\large\color{slate}{ {\rm A_{ parallelogram }}={\rm Altitude}\times{\rm Base} }\)
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
oh, my bad.
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
your shape says to be a parallelogram, but you need to find the average length and multiply times the altitude.

okay
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
it is actually a trapezoid (w/ a rectangle)
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
what can you tell or/and ask me so far?
OpenStudy (bohotness):
so its add all side or times all sides?
OpenStudy (bohotness):
thats with times highet times length right?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
yes, the rectangle is height times length.
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
so got that part with a rectangle?
OpenStudy (bohotness):
yes
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
k, now you have a trapezoid, i will draw it, but i will flip it for you to better see.
OpenStudy (bohotness):
okat

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
yes, it is a parallogram my bad.
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
i thought that 14cm is the entire bottom side, but it is not.
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
the dashed line of 8cm is an altitude, so the other part from that line to the corner (going to the left from the dashed line, on the bottom side of the parallelogram) is (can call it x, that part doesn't mater for us.)
OpenStudy (bohotness):
okay

oh so i should do with times highet times length first?
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
you know that parallelogram's area is length times altitude.
your altitude is 8, and length is 20 (as you can see on my or your picture).
the part of 14 and the x is what you should disregard.
OpenStudy (bohotness):
okay
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
so can you find the area of a parallelogram for me?
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
if you don't know how, please ask

okay
OpenStudy (bohotness):
so 197.8?
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
no
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
your altitude is 8cm, and the base is 20|dw:1422553328547:dw|
OpenStudy (bohotness):
ik this

sure, go ahead:D
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
oh you are multiplying 20 times 8, that is correct,
but what you wrote after "OR" WOULD MEAN THAT YOU ARE DIVIDING 20 BY 8.
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
Area (parallelogram) = (Altitude) times (Base)
OpenStudy (bohotness):
160
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
yup

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
so add this (the area of a parallelogram that you found to be 160) + the area of the rectangle
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
what was the area of a rectangle, do you know?
OpenStudy (bohotness):
yes
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
What was it?
OpenStudy (bohotness):
sorry lag

it;s fine
OpenStudy (bohotness):
umm i would say 160 but thats the area for the other one so i would say
OpenStudy (bohotness):
i think 1260
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
wait, you are adding 160 (area of a parallelogram) + 126 (the area of a rectangle) correct?
retry please.
OpenStudy (bohotness):
holdo n
