Why was Roe v. Wade a controversial case? It challenged bans on birth control being used by married couples. It supported the legality of separate but equal facilities for different races. It argued that privacy extends to a woman’s reproductive system. It demonstrated that segregation was completely unequal. It showed that the 14th Amendment could not be extended to individuals.

What do you know about this question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is has to do with abortion?

JoelTheBoss (joel_the_boss):

Roe v. Wade is controversial because it opened the door for a woman to choose abortion as a method of birth control. However, doctors and scientists know that the baby or fetus inside the womb is alive as it has a heartbeat, but would be unable to live on its own outside the womb at an early stage. The most controversial part of this verdict ended up turning into late term abortions that kill the baby at a later stage in pregnancy when the baby may or may not be able to survive outside the womb. This has occurred even when the mother's health is not at risk. Norma McCorvey, dubbed "Roe" in the case, is now an opponent of the findings of the court and has since filed an appeal of the decision in February 2005, stating that it was harmful for the woman that had the abortion. However, the petition was denied. She has also been active in pro-life demonstrations in which she was arrested on May 17, 2009 for attempting to speak out against the verdict given in 1973.
