The first Labor Day took place in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. The city hosted a parade, picnic, concert, and speeches to celebrate the holiday. The parade included ten thousand workers, who marched from City Hall to Union Square. For some, Labor Day was a time to celebrate workers' accomplishments. Others used the day as a time to voice their concerns and plan ways to improve working conditions and salaries.

Samuel Gompers, founder and president of the American Federation of Labor, believed that Labor Day was different from all of the other holidays in the United States. Gompers said, "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day… is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
