If the xylem and the phloem in a plant are damaged, what happens to the plant?

OpenStudy (somy):

what is the function of xylem and phloem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

water and solutes from the roots to the leaves phloem transports food from the leaves to the rest of the plant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

without that what would happen to the plant?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If there is a small area of xylem and phloem damaged, the plant will likely survive. If the entire stem is girdled by removing the bark and phloem, the plant will die as the root system will not be able to get nutrients from the stem and leaves.
