and yes radar that is helping

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The diagram shows that the bottom 2 sides there are equal. that means each is half of (2x+8) Now you can really break this into 2 rectangles. Upper one with sides of (2x+8) and 5, and bottom one with sides of (x+4) and 2. Their areas together is the big shape's area: $$ \text{shape_area} = \text{upper_rectangle} + \text{lower_rectangle} \\ 84_{cm^2} = (2x+8)_{cm} \cdot 5_{cm} + (x+4)_{cm} \cdot 2_{cm} $$ Now solve for x

OpenStudy (radar):

Find the area of the (2x + 8)(7) or 14x + 56 now subtract from that 2(x+4) 14x + 56 - 2x - 8 giving you the area of 12x + 48 We are told that the area equals 84 so now we have 12x + 48 = 84 Can you now solve for x?|dw:1422757949084:dw|
