Problem:A number decreased by negative three is equal to -40. Write an equation and find the number. Would the equation be X-3=-40 or X-(-3) =-40 It saying decreased makes it a subtraction problem so you obviously have one negative sign already then would you also add another negative sign in front of the 3 as it calls for a negative 3? Sort of confused. Thank you <3

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

well let's start by letting out unknown number be x. So a number DECREASED by -3 = -40 so x - ( -3) = -40 And two negatives make a positive :) So it would become x + 3 = -40

Nnesha (nnesha):

YES RIGHT :) 2nd one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um, so it is the second one?

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

yeep :) .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol thank you so much. <3

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

no worries :D ! Do you know how to find the number "x" ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep I'm ok with that part.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was just a little confused on the wording.

OpenStudy (butterflydreamer):

oh okay :)! But you got there eventually so YAY :D
