What was an effect of the decline in trade after the fall of the Roman Empire? People moved to new urban areas. Small farms struggled and failed. There was a shift to a rural society. Trade grew in other parts of Europe.

The effects of the fall of the Roman empire sent Europe into chaos. Barbarian armies plundered the border lands and some tried to rule certain parts of the west. People's standard of living fell and education and the knowledge of the ancients was lost to the general public. (Only the monks in the monasteries kept the ancient knowledge alive) The fall of the Roman empire in the west ushered in the period of history known as the Dark Ages. In the East the empire continued until 1453.
