You have the option to turn messages off or set it as "people I have fanned only." Also, if you want to tag moderators, tag specific names. @mods doesn't work. Report the message, change your messaging settings, and move on.

You're right, the behavior is not okay. The best you can do is prevent them from messaging you by changing your messaging settings. Also, you should have posted this in the Feedback section.

That's unfortunate. You shouldn't have any more problems if you've changed your settings. There are tons of nice people here that can help you, if you need it. Good luck with your studies. :)
