Mariel is four times as old as Rica. Five years ago, Rica was 30 years younger younger than Mariel. Find their present age.

Consider Rica as "X"
which means Mariel is 4x ( 4 times as old as Rica)
so 4x - 30 = X
3x = 30 which mean X( rica) WAS 10 years old (5 years ago) so now she IS 15
which means Marial is 4(15) = 60 years old

^that doesn't work out... if Rica = 15 and Mariel = 60... 5 years ago R = 10 and Mariel = 55 which isn't four times Rica's age.
