Define the Homestead Act and how do you think it benefited the early pioneers?

Basically it was a piece of legislation that passed that claimed if you lived on a piece of land, and farmed it for 5 year or more, that land from then on belonged to you. At one point, over 10% of the landed owned was through gained through this act..
