Help me double check. I think it's correct but my teacher says otherwise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Original statement: If students are allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets, then they will be able to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts presented within their course. Inverse: If students are not allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets, then they will not be able to develop an understanding of the math concepts presented within their course. Converse: Students will be able to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts presented within their course, then students are allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets. Contrapositive: Students will not be able to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts presented within their course if students are not allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets. See, my teacher thinks that the contrapositive is the same as the inverse because the "if" parts are the same, but I think otherwise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I honestly don't know, but if your teacher says so, it's probably best to listen! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SamJD316 I know, but that was how a contrapositve is supposed to work, I think. So I feel as if my teacher is completely wrong.

Directrix (directrix):

@Sputnikcer What are the instructions for this? And, what is the problem as it appears in your text?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The problem that I'm doing in the assignment is "Make an inverse, converse, and contrapositive for the original statement"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I had two OS's and forgot the Inverse in the last one.

Directrix (directrix):

Original p===>q p: students allowed to use technology q: they will develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts Contrapositive: ~ q ===> ~ p If students do NOT develop a deeper understanding of math concepts, then the students were NOT allowed to use technology.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait, then what is the Inverse supposed to be then?

Directrix (directrix):

What do you mean when you say you had two original statements?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I posted it saying how I was gonna post it in a much more visually pleasing stance, but didn't add the inverse and instead placed two Original statements. I deleted it and reposted it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm having so much lag right now. It takes me a minute to post something after I typed it.

Directrix (directrix):

Do you know the how to arrange these? See attached chart.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so.

Directrix (directrix):

I think you should add If and Then to these to reduce the confusion.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Inverse: If students are NOT allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets, then they will NOT be able to develop an understanding of the math concepts presented within their course. Right?

Directrix (directrix):

Is this the question you want to ask here: See, my teacher thinks that the contrapositive is the same as the inverse because the "if" parts are the same, but I think otherwise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I had. I'm really feeling as if my teacher was incorrect. Can't wait to rub it in his face.

Directrix (directrix):

I have to write it to know. Just a sec.

Directrix (directrix):

Inverse: ~ p ==> ~q If students are NOT allowed to use technology, then they will NOT develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts.

Directrix (directrix):

Yours is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kk

Directrix (directrix):

What was your contrapositive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Contrapositive: Students will NOT be able to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts presented within their course if students are NOT allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets.

Directrix (directrix):

Contrapositive: Students will not be able to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts presented within their course if students are not allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets. This is the inverse of the original statement. Writing the "if" in the back of the statement does not mean anything. It is what is behind the "if". Behind your "if" is the negation of the p (hypothesis) of the original statement.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

English please?

Directrix (directrix):

Contrapositive: Then (implied then) Students will not be able to develop a deeper understanding of the math concepts presented within their course --> if students are not allowed to use technology such as computers, calculators and tablets.

Directrix (directrix):

>>>See, my teacher thinks that the contrapositive is the same as the inverse because the "if" parts are the same, but I think otherwise. Teacher is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh. alright. Thanks.

Directrix (directrix):

Use both IF and Then in your statements and you'll be okay.

Directrix (directrix):

Write the contrapositive again using if and then. Let's see what you get.

Directrix (directrix):

Question for you: True or False: The inverse of an implication is the contrapositive of the converse of the statement. @Sputnikcer
