OpenStudy (anonymous):

Classic Greek civilization was the foundation for Hellenistic civilization. Classical Greece was Greece when it was composed of the city-states [Sparta and Athens for instance]. Hellenistic civilization came out of Classical Greece when Alexander the great formed his empire. As countries were added to the Greek Empire, they were "Hellenized" in order to insure submission and consistency. This Hellenistic civilization then consisted of countries that were not originally Greek but after their incorporation into the Greek Empire became "Greekish."
