Domain = {x | x is a date expressed in day/month/year} f(x) = temperature in Seattle Washington on that date Is this a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 would you happen to know? im thinking this is not a function since the answer could vary.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is the input here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the input would be the date, month, year

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so basically the date, yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the output is the temperature for that given date

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha yes.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

now if the output is say, the average temperature, then each input would have exactly one output

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but you make a great point, the temperature in general fluctuates throughout the day

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the key word is "average" but they didn't write that in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what i was thinking like one person may say the temperature is 52 degrees and another may say its only 49 degrees.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so I agree with what you got

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it cant be a function. now would it not be a function because atleast one input results in more than one output?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if they put "average" in there, then it would be a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup! thanks again!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
