look at the attached gif it is of pascals triangle explained here: http://www.mathsisfun.com/pascals-triangle.html So, When your problem has a minus in it, like (a - b)^5, the signs in your answer will alternate, positive, then negative, then positive, then negative, etc. (a-b)^5 a^5-5a^4b + 10a^3b^2 - 10a^2b^3 + 5a^4b^3-b^5
